Techniques for sewing perfect boxer shorts

Seam Ideas
When serging, use a four-thread serged seam for strong results. Check tension on various fabrics. To prevent serged seams from opening, reinforce beginning and end seam with a straight stitch on a sewing machine.
A French seam works nicely on boxers. To create this, start by placing the fabric wrong sides together and stitch with a 1/8" seam. Use a straight stitch or the narrowest plain zig zag your machine will sew. Trim away any uneven edges to leave a very even seam.

Next, press the seam flat, being careful not to stretch the fabric. Place fabrics right sides together with a 1/4" seam. Fold the seam to one side and press carefully.
Elastic Ideas
For lightweight woven fabrics, try using two rows of stitching to enclose the raw edges at the waist. Place elastic onto wrong side of boxer's waist edge. The elastic must extend only 1/4" above top of boxer. Stretch elastic and sew it to boxer, 3/8" away from elastic's edge. Turn elastic to right side of boxer. Sew on the elastic's lower edge.
You can also hide the elastic within a fold at the top of the boxer. Add to top of pattern before cutting out the fabric. There is a 3/8" seam at the waist, so add enough to make a total allowance of double the width of the elastic. Add 1-5/8" because with the 3/8" seam on the pattern, the total is 2".
